First Friday Mass

A DEVOTION TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS Today is the first Friday of the month. It is a day of devotion to the Sacred Hear of Jesus. The six o’clock  early morning mass goers of Santuario Eucaristico, had already painted the town with their colored red attire. It became their devotion to attend the nine consecutive masses every first Friday of the month. After the mass, the morning prayer (the lauds) follows and most stay even longer for a Holy Hour with the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Their face to face encounter with the Lord, during Adoration, enable them to reflect deeper about the Word of God that they heard during the mass. Most of the time, their intimate encounter with the Lord invites them to go for confession. A SOCIAL AFFAIR Nearby schools also attended the first Friday Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Last July 5, 2013, the eight o’clock am parish schedule was filled with students, faculty and staff of the Liceo de Cagayan University. Their president, Dr. Mariano Lerin was with them. They prepared so much for the occasion. Imagine, the whole school’s population being mass-moved to the the parish! During the mass, servers—Altar Servers; a Psalmist and Readers; and the Choir– were all students of Liceo. The School’s Altar Servers are under the Campus Youth Ministry led by Teacher June Merriam S. Peliño. Modjeska Nique, the psalmist; and Kyla Ibarra and Christian Manabat, both readers were selected students from different department of the school. The entire congregation was led by the school’s G-Clef Choir under the baton of Sir Dan Broces who is a Baptist Christian. The mass was presided by Fr. Joel Lasutaz, SSS, parish priest of Sacred Heart Parish and rector of Santuario Eucaristico. Angelicum School, which was presided by Fr. Marlon Reyes, SSS; Monark and J Builders, which were both presided by Fr. Kenny Joe Parlingayan– also celebrated the First Friday Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. UNDERSTANDING OUR CATHOLIC DEVOTION In every first Friday Mass, we recognize the Sacred Heart of Jesus whom He offered for the reparation of our sins. The devotion started with St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 17th century where Our Lord appeared to her from December 27, 1673, through 1675, asking her to receive Him in Holy Communion on the first Friday of every month and to meditate on His passion from 11:00 PM to 12:00 midnight each Thursday.[1] Jesus Christ told to St. Margaret, “In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you that my all powerful love will grant to all those who will receive Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments; and my Heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour.”[2] Moreover, there are 12 promises of Jesus for those who will devote themselves to His Sacred Heart: 1. “I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.” 2. “I will establish peace in their homes.” 3. “I will comfort them in their afflictions.” 4. “I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all in death.” 5. “I will bestow a large blessing upon all their undertakings.” 6. “Sinners shall find in My Heart the source and the infinite ocean of mercy.” 7. “Tepid souls shall grow fervent.” 8. “Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection.” 9. “I will bless every place where a picture of My Heart shall be set up and honored.” 10. “I will give to priests the...
