Homily

Jesus describes in our Gospel today the kind of people who follow Him. They differ in their intentions why they follow Jesus and in their faith. Some follow Him because they need something from Him, others because Jesus had done wonderful things for them, others because they were curious, other were suspicious, and still others because they would like to see miracles. But there are those who genuinely follow Jesus and learn from Him things about the Kingdom of God. These are the ones that stand strong in faith.

I say this because those who follow Jesus with other interests and not for the sake of Jesus do not obey His commands. Jesus said, “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ but not do what I command?” Then, He went on to expound to them what He meant.

“I will show you what someone is like who comes to me,
listens to my words, and acts on them.
That one is like a man building a house,
who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock;
when the flood came, the river burst against that house
but could not shake it because it had been well built.
But the one who listens and does not act
is like a person who built a house on the ground
without a foundation.
When the river burst against it,
it collapsed at once and was completely destroyed.”

Those who follow Jesus with a personal agenda do not act on what they heard from Him. Their being so called “disciples” are not founded on rock. They easily shun and crumble in their faith in Jesus. When tribulations come because of the faith, they readily fall away. But those whose faith are expressed by acting on the words of Jesus stand strong in the midst of any trouble or suffering.

We are then reminded that even if our society is filled with people who call themselves Christians  but are not practicing their faith, we stand strong against any tribulation by acting on the word of God. And because we remain steadfast, we will bear good fruits, fruits of kindness and generosity, forgiveness and love. Let us then stand strong by acting on the words of Jesus.
