New Year Brings New Hope

Oftentimes we associate New Year with new hope that all shall be well. It is because we want to secure ourselves and we want as much as possible joy and peace. However, as we all know joy and peace are inside jobs. This means that we can experience these even in the midst disturbance and chaos if we allow these things to grow within us. It is in our decision everyday if we want to be happy or to be sad.

The church starts the year with the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God (Theotokos). And it is but also good to ask the intercession of Mary, for she is not only the Mother of God but also our own mother so that we can have joy and peace every day throughout the year. Mary as our mother always understands us and will always assists us in times of our need. We are his children and she owns us and gives us her loving care.

And as Jesus is being revealed to the rest of the humanity, on the feast of the Epiphany, we can always look at him as our model and guide in our existence by living a life according to His most holy will. And Jose Mari Chan is right in saying, “let Him be the one to guide us as another New Year starts.” He is revealed as the light of the world and we share in His light, we can also be the light of the world especially to our brothers and sisters who are living in the many forms of “darkness” in our society.

In His baptism, Jesus undergoes the Father’s will for Him by submitting His very self in humble obedience. We are the followers of Jesus also by virtue of our own baptism. Let us be guided as we start the year by the baptismal gifts that we have received from Him. And let us live a kind of life that is pleasing before the eyes of the Father, like Jesus. “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

A Happy, Peaceful, and Grace-filled New Year to us All.
