First Reading: PRV 21:1-6, 10-13

Responsorial Psalm: PS 119:1, 27, 30, 34, 35, 44

Gospel: LK 8:19-21

When Mary together with Jesus’ relatives ask to see Jesus, Jesus’ answer to the one who shouted, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and they wish to see you” was not at all  to disown nor discredit His mother. It was instead to reveal how Mary become a mother to Him and what kind of mother she is. Jesus’ reply was, ““My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.”

What made Mary the biological mother of Jesus is attributed to her listening to the word of God as announced by Angel Gabriel in Luke 1:26-38 and obeying it. She accepted and believed in the word as it was spoken. She acted upon it as she bore Jesus in her womb. Right there and then, she became the mother of the Son of God.

The “brothers” that Jesus was referring to were His disciples who listened to the word of God. They followed Him immediately when He called them. They were constantly learning many things about the Kingdom of God from Jesus who also taught them privately. They listen to the word by acting upon it. Jesus called them His brothers.

It is in like manner that we too can truly become a part of the family of God if we listen to the word of God and act upon it.

Nevertheless, when can we say that we truly listen to the word of God when most of the time all we do is just hearing it. To hear the word of God and act on it is to listen by heart. Listening implies doing. A person who have truly listened is a person who acts on what was heard. It is necessary then that we do as Jesus tells us for by doing so we reveal to everyone that we belong to God.
