Fear or Faith?

fear or faith

In the face of adversity, your choice between fear or faith defines your survival or defeat.

Cancer.  Hershey could not believe her ears.  At 23?

Eight months of seemingly endless trips between her doctor’s clinic and the lab, the diagnostic report has sealed Hershey’s fate, at least by popular understanding about the disease.  While others her age pursue career goals, she will be battling her fiercest battle yet; one that continues to claim lives of about 7.6 million people worldwide, annually.

“Why Me?”

Quite easily, when mortality becomes too hard to ignore, defeating thoughts occupy the mind.

“Am I being punished for my sins?”

” Does God abhor me?”

” There are more evil people, but why me?”

If you are battling cancer today, your experience is shared by countless others in similar situations.

You are not alone.

Calm down.  It’s not as bad as you think it is.  Do not allow your fear to sow discouragement in your heart.

Cancer is nothing more than the ray of sun or the drop of rain that falls on all good and bad people alike.  It’s not a question of who’s sinning more or less.  As good things can happen to bad people, good people can also experience rough times.  That’s simply the enigma of life.

But you have something that “bad” people do not have.  And this will make the difference in your survival.

Faith in a living God who has conquered death.  Faith that He hears your cries and sees your pain.  Faith that wherever life’s challenges take you, God’s love will never forsake you.

For a moment, silence your mind and contemplate on His promises:

Joshua 1:9 – “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Isaiah 41:10 – “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Deuteronomy 31:6 – “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

No Less than the Bees

If you have believed long enough that you matter to God, hold on to this faith.  You are no less than the bees, or the trees.  God has held you in His heart, long before you opened yours to Him.

In the face of adversity, let these words from St. Augustine inspire you to focus on your faith, not on your fears:  “Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.”

Note:  Hershey is not a fictional character.  She’s battling an advanced stage of cancer of the ovaries that has metastasized to her liver.  Kindly include her in your prayers.
