Tuesday of the Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time

August 19, 2014

First Reading: EZ 28:1-10

Responsorial Psalm:  DT 32:26-27AB, 27CD-28, 30, 35CD-36AB

Gospel:  MT 19:23-30

Our Gospel today is a continuation of the Gospel reading yesterday. The rich young man went away sad because he refused to let go of his possessions in order to follow Jesus. With that he turned his back on eternal life.  Today, Jesus commented on this when He said: “Amen, I say to you, it will be hard for one who is rich to enter the Kingdom of heaven.  Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God.”  The rich who are too attached to material wealth may find it impossible to enter into Life.  But for those who value heavenly treasures more than earthly treasures will not have difficulty entering the Kingdom of God. This is the ultimate reward for those who are gracious to God, entrance into the Kingdom of God.  In addition to that, God is giving more.Francesco_Botticini_-_The_Assumption_of_the_Virgin

This is what Jesus assured His disciples after Peter clarified with Him about their being His followers leaving everything behind. Peter said to Jesus: “We have given up everything and followed you. What will there be for us?” Jesus replied to him that they will be able to enter into heaven plus a bonus of earthly wealth. “And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life.

Wow, this is truly amazing! This is what many, if not all, are longing for, heavenly and earthly treasures. We will be able to enter into heaven when the time comes. But while we are still living in this world, we will enjoy God’s material blessings. We only have to let God use the gifts He gave us, even our material and financial gifts.
