Reflection:

Our Gospel today is a continuation of the Gospel yesterday where Jesus fed 5,000 thousand men with the five loaves and two fish. After the people were fed and the left overs were gathered, Jesus instructed His disciples to precede him to the other side of the lake while he pray alone during the night which He always does.  In the midst of the darkness, just as when the boat with the disciples was tossed by the strong winds and big waves, Jesus came to them walking on the water.

This event teaches us that Jesus makes his presence felt especially during the times when everything seems so dark, when we do not see where we are heading, when we are tossed by the strong winds and big waves of problems in our lives. In these times of our lives, we sometimes feel that God is absent, that He has abandoned us. But, our Gospel reminds us that He is present all along.

Saint_Pierre_tentant_de_marcher_sur_les_eaux_by_François_BoucherWhen the disciples saw Jesus, they were terrified. They thought they were seeing a ghost. But Jesus assured them, “it is I, do not be afraid.” In like manner, Jesus assures us that we have nothing to be afraid of because He is here with us. He is over and above what causes our problems in life. He knows it and he can make it calm.

Peter wanted to make sure that it was indeed Jesus asked Him to bid him to come and to walk on the water towards. But he became frightened at the winds and the waves and he began to sink calling out to Jesus for help. He lost his focus on Jesus. And Jesus said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”  And Jesus saved him.

We may already have the confidence that God is with us but at times we lost our focus on God. We falter and do things on our own. WE lost our focus on God and that is the time when we can drown. But will always be there to our rescue if we call out to him.

The reminder for us then is to focus ourselves on God at all times, much more in times of distress. He is always with us assuring us that He is over and above our problems in life. We only have to have faith in Him.
