Our Gospel today reveals to us one of the many secrets to receive abundant blessings from God. This secret follows a pattern. First, God knows what we need and suffers with us in all our afflictions. He knows the weight of the problems and the burdens we are carrying even before we tell him that. Second, He requires our participation as he answers our prayers and as he provides for our needs. And third, He bestows His blessings super abundantly to those who actively take part in His actions.

Let us now apply this pattern.

When Jesus disembarked from the boat, He saw the vast crowd waiting for Him. At the sight of this vast crowd Jesus knew their needs and why they traveled ahead of Him on foot.  As the Gospel narrates, Jesus was moved with pity for them and He cured their sick. Even before the crowd asked Jesus for help, Jesus provided for their need for healing.  The crowd’s participation here is their trust and faith in Jesus manifested in their action of traveling on foot through the wilderness. They approached Jesus in faith not minding the discomfort and inconvenience it gave them.

After this healing, this pattern is again seen in the event that followed.

Lambert_Lombard_001The disciples were sensitive, in the practical level, to the needs of the people for food in the wilderness since it was already getting dark. And so they told Jesus to let the people go home lest they go hungry through the night. There were 5,000 men plus women and children. And we can just surmise that there were around 15,000 people. It was then a legitimate and practical concern of the disciples and not an avoidance of responsibility, we may suspect. Jesus, however, told his disciples to provide the people with food themselves. There is one problem though, they only brought for their dinner and perhaps breakfast as well, 5 loaves of bread and two fish which were barely enough for their dinner.

Jesus asked for the five loaves and two fish, which He took, blessed, gave thanks to His Father and had it distributed. This is the disciples’ participation. They let go of their own food, without any second thoughts of holding it for themselves. They gave all they have to Jesus trusting that He will also take care of them. And indeed Jesus did. He fed all the five thousand men, all the women and children and provided His disciples 12 wicker baskets filled with bread fragments. Because they shared what little they had, they received more than what they need.  This is a super abundant blessing indeed.

Jesus knew the needs of the people for food, the disciples actively participated by sharing all they had to Jesus. And they and everyone received the abundance of God’s blessings beyond their imagination.

This then is the secret revealed. If you want to receive abundant blessings from the table of the Eucharist, you need to fully, consciously and actively participate at Mass and after Mass until you come again for Mass the next Sunday. Have faith and trust that God knows, He provides. Participate then, be part of the blessing and you will have more blessings.
