With the goal to assist God’s people to deepen their faith, the Archdiocesan Shrine of the Holy Eucharist, Sacred Heart Parish administered by the Blessed Sacrament Congregation, successfully concluded its 3rd Archdiocesan Shrine EucharisticCongress at Polymedic Medical Plaza Function Hall last February 22, 2013. An estimated assembly of around 300 people coming from different parishes of Cagayan de Oro City eagerly came to attend the event. The Congress started with a mass celebrated by Archbishop Antonio Ledesma , S.J.DD, assisted by Fr. Joel R. Lasutaz, SSS. This year’s theme is Eucharist: Celebration of Faith in line with the celebration of the Year of Faith as declared by His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI. Fr. Joel in his welcome address joyfully acknowledged the different participants from the different parishes as well as the other pilgrims who arrived to join the gathering.

The speaker for this year’s congress is Msgr. Boy Salvador, SSJV, SLD. , the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro. Msgr. Salvador, a doctor in Sacred Theology and the head of the Liturgical Commission in Mindanao, opened his discussion with Pope Benedict XVI’s statement on intensifying the celebration of faith in the liturgy especially in the eucharist. (Porta Fidei- Oct. 11,2011).

“We want this Year to arouse in every believer the aspiration to profess the faith in fullness and with renewed conviction, with confidence and hope. It will also be a good opportunity to intensify the celebration of the faith in the liturgy, especially in the Eucharist, which is “the summit towards which the activity of the Church is directed; … and also the source from which all its power flows.” At the same time, we make it our prayer that believers’ witness of life may grow in credibility. To rediscover the content of the faith that is professed, celebrated, lived and prayed, and to reflect on the act of faith, is a task that every believer must make his own, especially in the course of this Year.” ( Pope Benedictin Porta Fidei

He emphasized that the Eucharist is a Mystery of Faith. The Mystery of Faith, that is, the ineffable gift of the Eucharist that the Catholic Church received from Christ, her Spouse, as a pledge of His immense love, is something that she has always devoutly guarded as her most precious treasure, and during the Second Vatican Council she professed her faith and veneration in a new and solemn declaration. In dealing with the restoration of the sacred liturgy, the Fathers of the Council were led by their pastoral concern for the whole Church to regard it as a matter of highest importance to urge the faithful to participate actively, with undivided faith and the utmost devotion, in the celebration of this Most Holy Mystery, to offer it to God along with the priest as a sacrifice for their own salvation and that of the whole world, and to use it as spiritual nourishment. (Mysterium Fidei – Pope Paul VI Sept. 3, 1965).

An open forum followed where the participants were allowed to express their views in line with the reflection questions given by Msgr. Salvador. To break the ice, the group enjoyed a series of raffle draws and presentations from some parishioners.
